Flyers

CD Vendor For ValleyFest

This black and white flyer for a ValleyFest fundraiser is actually one of my favorite designs. I grew tired of working in the grayscale that our funds forced me to use so I decided to make this particular flyer a stark black and white only affair. No grays, no shading, no colored paper. I wanted to give it a punk feel and thus used a static background. By twisting and curving the main text it looked almost like a bad sci-fi movie and that seemed to fit the general theme. Using the stamp filter on Photoshop I took a picture of someone holding a CD and made it fit in the design.

ValleyFest Battle Of The Bands

We meant for this to be a flyer but some time constraints turned it into a poster. It turned out to be a good thing because then I was able to use a type that looked good but would not be legible on a small 8x11 flyer. This poster was designed when I thought that the VF color scheme was going to be teal and dark purple. We later changed it to orange and blue but the color combination is strong despite not fitting in with the rest of the designs.

Mister And Miss LVC

This flyer caused a bit of commotion. I knew what to do for the Mister LVC half of the poster--just put a question mark over the Dutchmen's face. However, the Miss LVC half was a bit of an anomaly. We didn't have a Dutchwoman logo. Using Photoshop I took some curves out of the Dutchmen design and used them to hint breasts. I also shrunk the arms of the Dutchmen to make them more dainty. When I showed it to my supervisor he was unsure whether our college would allow it. The people in College Relations were understanding and were also amused by the design so they did not mind.

Running In High Heels Movie Night

The image in this poster hit me as soon as I heard the title of the movie. Running In High Heels is a pretty visual title. It's easy to get a mental picture from that. I had to find a stock photo of a woman running in high heels, which wasn’t easy, but after I did, the red of her dress didn't seem to say anything other than "I'm running in a dress." To solve that problem, I overlaid an American flag and lowered its opacity so it still had the feel of a dress. Because the quality of the images I found was very low, I used the poster edges filter which did not detract from the feel of the flyer. The font I used for most of this was a Will & Grace knockoff font. It's very visually interesting as it slants the vowels. I don't know why but it seemed to work in this flyer.

Vagina Monologue Talk Back

A talkback is not the easiest thing to design an eye catching poster for. How does one make an interesting visual for a group discussion? Instead of trying to conjure an image of the discussion, I chose to play off of what the discussion was about, the Vagina Monologues. My comics background shows through in this design as I use simple thought and speech bubbles to denote talking and thinking. I 'drew' the audience using simple shapes with Photoshop and although it took me a long time to make this flyer work, it was a very fulfilling design. The talkback was very well attended and I received a handful of positive comments about the flyer.

Coffeehouse Series - Brazz Tree

Something about the description of this band, in my mind, called for a great down home feel, classy and classic. The images of the act seem to have a lot of wood texture in them so I chose to play off of that. Using the wood to frame the image and information, I had the idea to make the name of the act look as though it were burned into the wood itself. Though only one copy of this flyer was made, it is probably one of my favorites that I did for the Coffeehouse series.

LVC Movie Night - JUNO

This poster was fun to design. I was happy that our school decided to offer free tickets to see this film that played at the historic Allen Theatre. Having seen the movie before the weekend our school offered tickets, I chose one of the best lines from the film to play off of for the main text. The real movie posters used that same orange and white stripe offset by a green text and so I chose to do the same. I had to make sure the word "Free" was visible and prominent. Unfortunately I couldn't attend the free movie so I'm not sure how many people went.

LVC Coffeehouse Series - Courtney Lindgren

For most of the Coffeehouse Series performers I liked to create a frame that would display the act and hold the necessary information. I like the contrast between the deep green of the background and the bright orange of the type. I lucked out and found a picture of the same guitar that Courtney has and used it in this design. The blue sunburst really works well as a highlight color.
